I remember being 8 or 9 going to see Robin with my Dad for the first time. We went into his back garden and there was his home made wooden telescope all set up. Robin lines it up and let me have a look. I saw Saturn, rings facing, about 2cm in diameters and I was hooked. He then pointed it to empty space and we had another look, it was a star cluster, Hercules I think. I was in awe and I wanted to know more. My dad and I joined up and I spent many evenings, weekends and cold nights up at the scopes building huts, manning gates and ushering as many public through as we could take 50p off! 2000 on one cold night watching Halley's comet!
I have used this story on covering letters for jobs to show when my passion for science really kicked off. Since that evening I followed a path that lead me to a career in Geophysics and now as a Physics teacher.
Robin was a huge part of that and I will miss him.
My deepest condolences.
